AUTUMN LITTER DRIVE

Intrepid FOR A-ites led by the indefatigable Linda Boot and Sandra McPhee, organized this event once again with Tony Fernandes, targeting Forest Glade and heavily trafficked James Lane in the main.

Some twenty bags of garbage were picked up despite the fact that during the recent Epping Forest Conservation Trust’s Forest Glade Project, some 36 bags of assorted litter were removed including a small cash box ( empty ::) stolen cabling possibly from the Newlon site to "liberate" valuable copper wire, sinks, TV’s, garden waste etc.

The key “problem” areas consistently appear to be along James Lane, often used as free parking by visitor’s to Whipps Cross Hospital, in lieu of paid parking inside, industrial dumping of catering leftovers, lunch bags and fast food containers etc dumped from cars of workers in the area and run of the mill fly tippers especially along the perimeter of Whipps Cross Hospital’s Woodbury Unit and Ambulance Garage.

The Corporation of London(COI) as always kindly supplied us with pickers, high visibility vests etc and Martin Whitfield, Volunteer Development Officer also with Open Spaces –Epping Forest was on hand too .

Martin is also working with FORA towards initiatives to prevent littering and enforce the laws against dog fouling in particular, which is a health hazard especially in the open area of Forest Glade, next to St Andrew’s Church and the Leytonstone School wall, where resident’s children and local school children tend to play.

Pictures will also be sent FYI to Waltham Forest Council’s Direct section and Whipps Cross Hospital as appropriate

Our thanks to all who turned out as also to the FOR A and COI Team that organized this. The next event will be in late Spring 2009.
