14 Sep 2006 - 20mph ZONE Cavendish Drive to Colworth Road

The Council leader, Clyde Loakes, has made public the results so far of consultation exercises on a proposal to turn the area between Cavendish Drive and Colworth Road into a 20mph Zone. It is an initiative funded by Transport for London to reduce traffic speed.

FORA's Chair, Mina Patel, wrote to the Council on 27 July on behalf of the Association saying that the 20mph Zone would be generally beneficial to the area, but made a number of alternative suggestions as to how it could be implemented.

Among other things, the letter urged that instead of humps and cushions being installed, the red stripe/20mph or a more attractive alternative be repeated at intervals throughout the area as a visual reminder of the speed zone.

A reply from Chris Hardman, of the Council's Environmental Services division, said that humps and cushions had brought considerable success in both reducing speeds and accidents.

In an email message to local residents, Mr Loakes said 67% of those responding had indicated support for the scheme when the consultation ended on 28 July.

However, some further issues were raised and a number of roads were re-consulted.As a result, it is now recommended that humps be installed on Esther Road, but not on Lytton Road. People in Poppleton Road - originally outside the Zone - are being consulted on whether they want humps along the section from Preston Road to Colworth Road.

A Council officer later gave a breakdown which showed how relatively few people had responded to the original consultation. Of the 2332 leaflets that were delivered in the area 213 (9%) were completed and returned. Of these 67% were in favour of the scheme, 27% were against
and 6% undecided.
