UPDATE: THIS APPLICATION WAS APPROVED BY THE COUNCIL'S PLANNING COMMITTEE IN NOVEMBER 2006. THE FLATS ARE NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION  AND ARE DUE TO BE COMPLETED LATER THIS YEAR, 2008

Public Meeting held by FORA over new plans

                                  to build flats on site

This is a view of the back of St Andrew's Church. Behind

the green fence was where the old church hall stood.

Newlon  Housing Trust, a charitable housing association

based in Hackney, has applied to build a two-storey

building, with a  high roof, comprising nine flats on the site.

It was sold to Newlon in February, this year, by Waltham

  Forest Council.

The Council's own application to build flats on the

site, was turned down last year, following opposition from

  residents.

A public meeting was held to discuss the application on

August 15 at St Andrew's new hall. It was called by the

FORA Executive Committee, which does not consider the

scheme appropriate for the site. A report on the

meeting can be seen in the section of the website, FORA

photos and Event reports. On August 21, A letter from FORA

urging the Planning Committee to refuse the application was

  sent to the Council.

St Andrew's  is regarded as a fine architectural example of

Victorian  Early English style, and has many fine

stained glass windows -- as seen in the photo. The church

was built between 1885-1892 and designed by Sir Arthur

William Blomfield, who rebuilt the nave of

  Southwark Cathedral.

St Andrew's was given Grade II listed building status in

February, this year, in recognition of its special architectural

interest. The view opposite will be lost to the public if

  the Newlon scheme is approved.
